Today we began with this opener (pdf) reviewing the topics on the Math Skills Assessment.

We then spent some time reviewing those topics and each group presented on a skill. Please take a look at the following images and critique them (nicely). (Click on each image to view it larger.) What could we do better next time to make a better visual explanation of a math topic? Feel free to leave a comment on this post.

As a reminder, the subtracting integers one below isn't quite correct. Can you remember/figure out what's wrong with it? (Again, don't feel bad if you were in this group, this is how we learn.)

Your homework for tonight is:
  1. Review for the Math Skills Assessment. You'll be assessed over these skills tomorrow.

  2. If you haven't completed the assignments from last night, please do so, as they are due by first period tomorrow.

  3. Make sure you know your Google Apps login and password by tomorrow. If you don't know it, you can look it up on the Infinite Campus portal. (Login to the portal: your id number; password: first initial of first name, first initial of last name, then your 6-digit birthdate. So if John Smith was born on May 12, 1995, his password would be js051295.) Once logged in click on Technology in the left navigation and then your google apps login information will show in the content pane.

  1. i think the people that did multiplying and dividing integers did a good job

  2. athomas - Can you say a little bit more about that? Why do you think they did a good job? What was so good about it? What do you think they did well? What was most helpful to you?

  3. The size of the subtracting integers is very nice. Its handy that the integer rules are there for you to see. I like the organization of Order of Operations.

  4. Great comment Alison! I think that really helps students see what helps other students.

  5. I think that everyone's is really good! I think that the people that gave a problem for the students to figuer out was a smart idea. Because they are making sure that you understand it!! I agree with Alison the group that did the Order of Operations had really nice organazation! My group which is the multiplacation i think that we should have explained it more on the board but personally I think every one did a phenominal job on organization explaing and examples!!

  6. i think everyone did a good job but i feel my group order of operation could of done some simpler problems to make it easier to understand

  7. Thanks lbarrent for your thoughts. I agree, I think a problem or two for the students to figure out is a nice touch. I also think it's tough to figure out how much to put on the board and how much to just explain orally, but we'll all get better at that.

  8. JAKEW2015 - So you think your group's problems were a little too difficult? I think it is helpful to have a mix of easier problems and more difficult problems, but sometimes it's hard to figure that out in advance (speaking from experience here!).

  9. I really like how the "subtracting integers" group drew a visual of the outcomes of possible integers. This is a very good technique to use so there is no confusion on the answers for each addition problem.

  10. I think everyone did a good job. I appreciated the boards that were neat and that followed a sequence that was easy to understand. I do like the boards that had written explanations as well as equation examples. I thought the last board was done well as far as neatness and the second to last board showed good examples

  11. NikkiB - I, too, like the ones that are neat and follow a sequence. That's something I sometimes struggle with as a teacher. I'm good at the sequence part, but sometimes not so good at the neat part (especially when I try to squeeze something in on the Smart Board - you'll see).

  12. I think that everyones whiteboard was great. I really liked the ones that had writing on their board that explained what to do and then also had some examples to prove that it was true and even had a problem. I think that me group that had the adding and subtracting borad should have put our work on it. Good job everybody.

  13. I think that everybody did a great job, but it felt as though almost everyone was trying to write down the hardest examples they could think of. I think it would've slightly more helpful if there were some basic problems in there.

  14. I think that the board for order of operations was good. It expalained how pemdas works. The one thing I would change is the size of the examples, they were to small for me.

  15. I think that the multiplying one could have been neater and not uside down.

  16. I liked how most of the groups showed all of the work that they did to get to the answer and how they wrote out the steps to explain the problem.

  17. I think that all of the groups did a wonderful job on showing how to do each of the problems. It was easy to understand and most of them were easy to read. I also liked how everyone did the example problems. That really helped me because then I knew how to do that on a different problem.

  18. I think all groups did well in explaining their topic and giving examples. Each one was easy to understand there was only one thing about the multiplying fractions group. We could have made ours a little more neat so we didnt have to keep flipping the boared but other than that i thought that it was good.

  19. I must repeat the i think all groups did a decent job. Although, in my group i made sure to focus on not pointing out the hard things about the problem. Instead, we made sure the we explained it as if the crowd was a kindergartner that had never seen it before. This will benefit everyone in the classroom to better understand things.

  20. I think everybody did a great job on the white boards. I think some of the groups could have put more examples on the board and wrote a bit bigger.
